Welcom to another exciting Sci-Fi Reflections blog!! To start things off; I do apoligize for the long abscence of blogs. I have been extremely busy, and as terrible as it may sound, I have not had the time or willpower to watch very much Doctor Who. However, I have finally created my analysis of the Third Doctor, that includes his number of appearances, a grade, and a notable quote. This information will of course be synthesized and put under the Third Doctor and Companions page. Once again, I do apologize for the wait and hopefully I will be able to progress to the next episode soon. Without further ado, the Third Doctor!!
The Second Doctor’s tenure ends when the Time Lord Counsel decides to exile him to Earth in the 20th century and erase his memory of time-space travel. They also force him to regenerate, and when he wakes up in an English hospital, he is aghast to find himself in a new body, completely indistinguishable from his former self. A new era in Doctor Who has begun.
The Third Doctor, to put it simply is an aristocrat. He wears fancy dress clothes, he drives a classy old-style car, and he prefers the best that 20th century Earth can give him. He has an air of authority and credibility (and maybe a little bit of arrogance) like no other Doctor. While the Second Doctor flew under his enemies’ radar, the Third Doctor prefers to sidestep tactfulness and say what is on his mind that very minute. He is aggressive and dominant, and in the end, usually winds up getting what he wants. He doesn’t care for authority, red tape, or bureaucracy, and is consistently setting out on his own rather than taking the chain of authority route that the Brigadier takes. However, despite his constant frustration at the indecisiveness of British Intelligence, he makes many firm and faithful friends at UNIT including the Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, Liz Shaw, and Jo Grant.
He is much more athletic than any of his predecessors, and he engages in hand-to-hand combat frequently. He is more of an action hero, and although he still loves cool gadgets and using his head to get out of trouble, he uses his hand-to-hand fighting skills whenever it seems practical. He also has numerous chase scenes, and in general, is a man of action.
The Third Doctor’s tenure was quite historic with many new characters and villains being introduced including the Autons, Sontarans, and The Master. Also companions Jo Grant, Sarah Jane Smith, and the Brigadier became popular while alongside the Third Doctor. Overall, Jon Pertwee did the role superbly, and in many ways is seen as the second best doctor behind Tom Baker.
Appearances: 24 (Spearhead from Space-Planet of the Spiders)
Grade: B
Notable Quote: “I’ve just reversed the polarity of the neutron flow.”
“Now listen here!”
