Third Doctor and Companions...
The Third Doctor Portrayed by Jon Pertwee
Appearances: 24 (Spearhead from Space - Planet of the Spiders)
Grade: B+
The Third Doctor is an aristocrat. He wears fancy dress clothes, he drives a classy old-style car, and he prefers the best that 20th century Earth can give him. He has an air of authority and credibility and perhaps a bit of arrogance like no other Doctor before him. While the Second Doctor avoided attention through casual dress and personality, the Third Doctor attracts attention by being physically imposing and vocally combative. He is aggressive and dominant and in the end usually winds up getting what he wants. He doesn’t care for authority or red tape, and he consistently sets out on his own rather than following UNIT standard procedure. However, despite his constant frustration at the indecisiveness of British Intelligence, he makes many firm and faithful friends at UNIT including the Brigadier, Captain Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, Liz Shaw, and Jo Grant.
The Third Doctor is much more athletic than any of his predecessors, and he engages in hand-to-hand combat regularly. He is more of a classic action hero, and although he still loves using his head to get out of trouble, he uses his hand-to-hand fighting skills whenever it is practical. He has numerous chase scenes, and in general, is a man of action.
Notable Quotes: "I reversed the polarity of the neutron flow."
"Now listen here!"
The Brigadier
Appearances: 23 (The Web of Fear - Battlefield)
Grade: A
The Brigadier is the head of England's division of UNIT, a global intelligence task-force designed to respond and counter paranormal or extraterrestrial threats. When the Doctor is exiled to earth, the Brigadier decides to take him on as UNIT's scientific advisor, having already met his second incarnation when he was only a colonel in The Web of Fear.
A military man to the core, the Brigadier is determined, decisive and brave. Though perhaps inflexible at times, in the face of adversity the Brigadier is as resilient and dedicated a soldier as they come. He is the embodiment of British grit and will to win, and the idea that he just might fail is not fathomable to him. Sometimes, he will even go over his superiors' heads if he believes it to be truly necessary to thwart his opponent. The Brigadier is courageous and confident and has the skill and competence to save the day single-handed, which occasionally he does.
The Brigadier is one of the most popular companions of all times, having appeared in twenty-three stories alongside six different doctors.
Notable Quotes: "Chap with the wings there, five rounds rapid."
(referring to the Doctor) "Wonderful chap. All of them."

Elizabeth Shaw
Appearances: 4 (Spearhead from Space - Inferno)
Grade: C+
Liz Shaw is a scientist from the 20th century who is assigned by the Brigadier to assist the Doctor in his work as UNIT's scientific advisor.
While potentially an interesting character, the sad fact is that Liz Shaw appears in only four stories encompassing one season. Though clearly meant to be a foil to the Third Doctor's brash and bravado, and though she has good screen time, she is mostly seen in the capacity of a scientist as opposed to being in scenes that build her character. Apart from explaining that she is independent and intelligent, the series fails to really develop her personality, and not much else is known about her.
After the story Inferno, Liz returns to Cambridge to continue her research. She is one of the few companions to never go inside the TARDIS although she does help the Doctor in his initial attempts to get it working again.

Jo Grant
Appearance: 15 (Terror of the Autons - The Green Death)
Grade: B+
Josephine Grant is a member of UNIT and acts as the Doctor's personal assistant. She acquires this position not because of her merits, but because of the influence of a politically powerful relative. Although the Doctor is dismayed that she is not a professional scientist, he does not have the heart to tell her that she is not wanted. Despite this rough introduction, they soon develop a close relationship.
Jo is a very sweet young girl who cares deeply about her friends and the Doctor. Although she is not used to the rough life the Doctor lives initially, through courage and determination she soon learns the skills required to keep up with him and even save his life once in a while. Due to these experiences, Jo matures and grows stronger as a character, relying less and less on the Doctor. Jo is enthusiastic, bubbly, and just made the show fun during her time there.
After disappointing a series of would-be suitors, Jo parts ways with the Doctor when she falls in loves with Nobel-Prize winner Professor Jones and agrees to help him study the vegetation of the Amazon.
