Eighth Doctor and Companions...
The Eighth Doctor Portrayed by Paul McGann
Appearances: 2 (Doctor Who: Enemy Within - Night of the Doctor)
Grade: C
The Eighth Doctor is in the unusual position of being the Doctor with the least amount of screen-time to his name (barely an hour) but yet with the most amount of spin-off material in the form of novels, audio dramas, and comics. As the relationship between the spin-off material and the TV series is murky at best, even the most dedicated Doctor Who fan has trouble establishing his timeline and distinguishing canon from non-canon. It is known that it is during this Doctor's incarnation that the Time War begins.
The Eighth Doctor greatly treasures human life and encourages those around him to take full advantage of it, often by giving them helpful hints about the future, but at the same time he is forced to come to grips with the devastating effects of the Time War. Though this darkens his personality at times, he never returns to the cynical and manipulative ideology of his predecessor whom he now holds in disdain. In his stories he is frequently plagued by bouts of amnesia that started shortly after his regeneration. As with many of his other incarnations, this Eighth Doctor has a penchant for being sleight of hand, and he is not above pickpocketing people to get what he needs.
The Eighth Doctor is the first Doctor to romantically kiss his companion on-screen. Upon being persuaded by the Sisterhood of Karn shortly before he is about to regenerate, the Eighth Doctor drinks the Elixir of Life in order to become a warrior who can fight in the Time War.
Notable Quote: "Charlie, C'rizz, Lucie, Tasmin, Molly, friends and companions I've known, I salute you. And Cass, I apologize. Physician, heal thyself." (drinks the elixir)
Dr. Grace Holloway
Appearances: 1 (Doctor Who: Enemy Within)
Grade: C-
Grace Holloway is a cardiologist from San Francisco who operates on the Seventh Doctor and accidentally kills him unaware that physiologically he is not from Earth. She proceeds to help his regenerated Eighth incarnation defeat the Master and stop the Eye of Harmony from destroying the planet.
Grace is warm, compassionate, and honest, and she is dedicated in her role as doctor. She has a real heart to help people but the Doctor tells her she is, "tired of life, but scared of dying". After their adventure, the Doctor invites Grace to travel with him, but she refuses, telling him he should come with her.
Grace is the first companion to romantically kiss the Doctor on-screen. As she makes only one official appearance on-screen, some fans suggest that Grace should not be considered a proper companion.
Notable Quote: "I finally meet the right man, and he's from another planet."
Author's Note: In Night of the Doctor before turning into the War Doctor, the Eighth Doctor calls out the names of several companions whom up until that point had only been in audio dramas and therefore debatable as being part of the Doctor Who canon. However, as they have been now acknowledged by the Doctor on-screen, it is safe to consider Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drewn, and Molly O' Sullivan as legitimate and canonical companions with all the rights thereof despite none of them ever making a single television appearance.
